An insurance marketplace partnered with the best carriers possible

An insurance marketplace partnered with the best carriers possible

Our Summary

A leading insurance lead generation company that partners with dozens of carriers such as Progressive, Nationwide, and Farmers. The company collects data to share with carriers who are then able to offer the insurance to consumers. Everquote uses top brand name partners so consumers can have confidence in the insurance offered to them.

Company Overview

Everquote was founded in 2011 by Seth Birnbaum and Tomas Revesz. It’s headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a marketplace, it provides quotes to consumers for car insurance, home insurance, health insurance, life insurance, and commercial insurance. The company began as AdHarmonics, an internet advertising company before developing its marketplace platform for auto insurance and growing from there. Commercial insurance quotes are offered through Bold Penguin, also known as the Commercial Insurance Center.

Geographic Representation

Everquote works with insurance providers and has the ability to connect consumers with carriers in all 50 states.

Lines of Coverage

Everquote is able to offer major commercial insurance lines needed by most businesses as offered through Bold Penguin.

The types of commercial insurance policies listed with Everquote include:

  • Business Owners: A combination policy with general liability and commercial property packaged together.
  • General Liability: Protection against third-party claims of property damage or bodily injury.
  • Professional Liability: Protection against claims that you made a professional error resulting in damages or harm.
  • Commercial Auto: Protection for liability and property damage in at-fault accidents in work vehicles.
  • Workers’ Compensation: Pays for medical care and lost wages of employees hurt while working.

Top Industries Served

Because Everquote works with so many major insurance carriers, it is not limited to working with certain industries. It is able to help in the placement of most insurance policies by using its keyword search bar.

Some of the types of companies Everquote serves:

  • Retail
  • Consulting
  • Professional services
  • Home services
  • Agriculture

Premium Costs

As a marketplace, Everquote doesn’t underwrite the policies directly. Their prices are subject to the price models of the companies they partner with. By shopping for carriers, Everquote is able to help business owners find the right policy for the best possible price.

Underwriting Process

The Everquote system will first ask you relevant questions about your business, its industry, and its structure. It then gets your address and contact information. We ran a quote for a professional services company (accountant) and received two partner pairings. Rather than give the details online, we were asked to call to finalize the quote and buy the policies.

AM Best Ratings

AM Best provides financial strength ratings for insurance carriers to help consumers determine if a carrier has the funds to handle massive claims. Because Everquote isn’t a carrier, it doesn’t have an AM Best rating. However, its partner companies do. Here is an example of some of the AM Best ratings for partners:

  • AAA Insurance: A
  • Farmers Insurance: A
  • Nationwide: B+

Complaint Index

Every year, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) compiles data on complaints. Each insurance carrier is assigned a complaint index score that represents the ratio of how many complaints the company received based on its size. The NAIC uses 1.0 as the national average baseline with scores above the average meaning that the company had more than the average number of complaints. Scores under 1.0 fared better with fewer complaints.

Everquotes partners would be the carriers who have data maintained by the NAIC, not Everquote itself.

Examples of Everquote’s partner complaint index scores are:

  • Liberty Mutual: 1.87
  • Farmers Insurance: 0
  • Nationwide: 0

Business owners should search the NAIC complaint index for the company that Everquote pairs them with to get a better understanding of customer satisfaction.

Reputation

Since Everquote is a marketplace for other carriers, it can be difficult to know what type of service and satisfaction you’ll receive working with them. We took a look at real reviews on Trustpilot to see if we could glean any insights about this provider. There were only 9 reviews with the majority (89%) being bad. Poor reviews revolved around the company selling data and from agents who bought leads feeling the leads were poor quality.

The company did not fare much better with the Better Business Bureau. It maintains a B rating with 61 reviews averaging 1.05 stars. The BBB says that there were 42 complaints closed in the past 12 months. Those who complain cite being called by multiple insurance representatives repeatedly to sell them insurance when it was never made clear that they would sell their personal data.

Concluding Thoughts

Everquote made its name by being a lead generation company for auto insurance. It has since branched out to offer everything from home, life, and health to commercial policies. All commercial insurance is offered through a third-party, Bold Penguin. The business model places insurance needs with viable carriers.

Methodology

CommericalInsurance.net employs its own independent research to come up with the details for reviews. We do this so that you can have as many insights as possible about a company so that you can make the best decision for your commercial insurance. We take into consideration the company’s history and where they serve. We want to highlight the appetite that a company has as this suggests where business owners can get the most competitive rates. Where possible, we include premium data. From there, we take into account formal complaints, and financial strength ratings along with public reviews painting a broad picture of the company’s reputation.
